- Coulomb, Charles-Augustin de
(1736-1806)
physicist
Born in Angoulême, Charles-Augustin de Coulomb served as a military engineer in the French west Indies before retiring to Blois at the time of the revolution of 1789. A pioneer in electrical theory, he continued his research on electricity, magnetism, and friction. He invented the torsion balance (1777) to measure the force of electrical attraction and magnetism, then formulated the principle known as Coulomb's Law, governing the interaction between electrical charges. He published his treatise, Théorie des machines simples, in 1779, and later, during the Revolution, assisted the French government in developing a metric system of weights and measures. The unit of quantity used to measure electrical charges, the coulomb, is named for him. De Coulomb was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1781.
